Smith and Nephew has ceased sales of its Oxinium Genesis II and Profix II Knee Systems. The Smith and Nephew Knee was withdrawn because of reports of abnormally high rates of failure of the femural component not properly adhering to the femur. The Smith and Nephew Knee Replacement Systems were manufactured between February, 2002, and August, 2003.
Also, the Depuy Ultra High Weight Polyethelene Knee Prosthesis fails prematurely due to a poor sterilization process.
These two manufacturers are offering settlements.
The Depuy Knee was manufactured prior to 1998, even though they could have been implanted after 1998. The Gamma Irradiation Sterilization process used by Depuy on this specific knee caused premature deterioration of the polyethelene insert which is usually indicated on x-ray as flaking, chipping, or delamination of the polyethelene insert. This then causes a need for a revision surgery.
