The recent controversy surrounding cox-2 inhibitor drugs such as Vioxx and Bextra has already resulted in a number of lawsuits and compensation claims being filed against the manufacturers of the drugs, and this because of serious side effects that can be suffered by patients taking these medications. Bextra is a cox-2 inhibitor, used to treat osteoarthritis, menstrual cramps, and other adult pain. The drug, manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, was approved by the FDA in November 2001, despite reports of serious skin problems in some people that had already taken the drug.

Another major cox-2 inhibitor, Vioxx, was taken off the market in September 2004 following indications that the drug was linked to a dramatic increase in heart attacks and strokes in longer term users. Although Bextra has not yet been conclusively linked to the same problems, testing is to be carried out to check any possible links due to the similarities between Bextra and the recalled drug, Vioxx. And, although Bextra has not yet been linked with heart attacks and strokes, this drugs comes with some serious and deadly side effects of its own – Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis, both of which are potentially deadly skin diseases.

The side effects related to Bextra have already resulted in a number of Bextra lawsuit filed against the drug’s manufacturer, Pfizer. The number of Bextra lawsuits is expected to increase as more evidence of the dangers of this drug comes to light, and particularly if it is found to be linked to heart trouble and strokes.
